“There just aren’t any leadership guides or courses for new leaders, are there? All you get trained on is how to deal with annual leave requests, or disciplinary actions, or performance reviews. No one really teaches you how to be a leader from the minute you step into this space for the first time.”
This was D and I chatting passionately over a Teams call. We were reflecting on the fact that when you start as people leader for the first time, no one offers you training nor guide on all other – human – aspects that come with being a leader. Why is that?
The next day, which happened to be a Saturday, I woke up with an idea. How about I write this kind of leadership guides?
And this is how this page and a linked guide (more to come!) came to live.
Welcome to The Diary of a Learning Leader – a place for leaders new to this area, and those who of you who are seasoned and can offer advice to those who are just starting on this journey.

Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes
Those of you who are starting the leadership journey, I hope you find it useful, helpful, and thought-provoking. Those of you who have years of experience, I hope you share your stories and guidance with others.
No matter what your leadership beginnings were, I hope we all work towards being better leaders.
If you have suggestions for topics, suggestions for other leadership guides, or advice to share, please reach out to me. I would love to make this space as collaborative and supportive as possible.
